Behold, the future of ocean research. The SeaOrbiter is a marine skyscraper design that is set to begin construction by the end of 2012:
At 170 feet tall, this colossal ocean lab will house several laboratories and is also capable of sailing the high seas, making it the first vertical vessel to sail in the name of oceanography. It will also be powered by sustainable resources like solar, wind and wave power.
Designed by French architect Jacques Rougerie and supported by former NASA Administrator Dan Goldin, the European Space Agency as well as other industrial organizations, the project is expected to cost around $43 million.
